However, you may not be aware that the traditional metal canning lids have a PVC/vinyl coating with a plastisol/PVC seal gasket. This concerned me, as the liquid in the jar can vaporize and then drip back into my food or drink. I became even more troubled when I noticed the vinyl coating flaking off after simply storing vinegar in a glass jar.

To address this issue, I set out to find alternative lid solutions. Plastic caps are not ideal as they degrade, shedding microplastics and releasing toxic chemicals. Even so-called "BPA-free" options may contain other harmful substances. Plastic lids are also fragile, sensitive to heat (preventing sanitization by boiling), and ultimately contribute to pollution that harms wildlife.

Choosing stainless steel lids with silicone gaskets gives me peace of mind, as they are durable and designed to last indefinitely. This eliminates the need for wasteful disposal of metal or plastic lids. By making this simple switch, I can enjoy my food and beverages without worrying about harmful chemicals or environmental damage.
